Anyah bit back a smile, pointing at herself innocently, while Sheela just glared. âWho, me?â
Chet stomped right up to her, until he got close enough for Sheela to instinctively put an arm between them. âI have a bone to pick with you,â he snarled. âYour frilly bodyguard doesnât need to be a part of this.â
Anyah looked around, nonchalant as ever. âHm. Well, given that your babysitter is nowhere to be seen, I suppose thatâs fair.â
âBut--!â
âNot to worry, Sheela, just stand behind me. Weâre only going to chat.â
She was never intimidated by Chet in the slightest. In fact, she had secretly been hoping sheâd run into him again. Just to see if--
âI heard what you told people about me.â
Ah, perfect.
âDid you like it?â
The smugness in her voice must have been too much for him, because she swore he was going to pass out with how red his face got. âMax is not my boyfriend!â
Anyah squinted. Huh. Okay. âThatâs the part that youâre gonna be defensive about? Really? None of the other stuff? I mean, I barely even touched on Max, but--â
âYou wanna know what your problem is, Princess?â He jabbed a finger at her. âYouâre as much of a poser as I am!â
Anyah gently held Sheela back, a big smirk on her face. âSo you admit to being a poser?â
âAt least Iâm not as pathetic as you. At least I know it.â
Okay, maybe that hurt a little bit. Whatever, she wouldnât give him the satisfaction of acting offended. âIâm really sorry, I fail to see what we have in common?â
âYouâre a fake,â he spat. âAn entitled diva who relies on charm to mask all her flaws! But I can see right through you, okay?!â He grabbed her wrist and pulled her closer to him. âBecause youâre just like me on the inside, arenât you? Petty.â
A hand grabbed Chetâs arm and twisted it behind his back. âOw! Let go of me, you freak!â
Sheela glared at him over his shoulder, holding him in place. âYou do not touch the princess without her permission,â she spoke, in a low, hateful voice. âWhen you do, I am allowed to use force.â She tightened her grip, and people started to stare.
âSheela,â Anyah whispered. âItâs okay, letâs not make a scene.â
âHe grabbed you,â Sheela growled, locking eyes with Anyah. âHe deserves it.â
âLet go of me already! She told you to!â
âNot unless you apologize!â
âWoah, woah! Excuse me!â A large hand rested gently on Sheelaâs shoulder. She whipped her head around to scowl at the owner, and he retracted. âCan you let go of him, please?â Sheela looked to Anyah, who nodded, and sighed.
âFine.â
Max smiled politely at the ladies as Chet ran to be behind him. âThank you. Iâm sure whatever is happening here can be resolved with our words, hm?â
âIâm not saying anything until he says sorry to Anyah,â snapped Sheela. âSheâs going through enough because of him!â
âWell unless Anyah apologizes to me, Iâm not saying anything either!â
âThen apologize to Arael,â Anyah sneered. âOh, wait, heâs not here.â Her stormy gaze shifted to Maxâs eyes.
